best 72 hour kits
Are you prepared for an "apocalyptic" event?
I say that to mean that most of the most probable events wouldn't necessarily kill everyone, but would have a large scale global effect in which everyone would be fending for there lives.
I just finished reading about a "72 hour kit" (this is something that FEMA recommends that every household have. Seen here: http://www.ready.gov/america/getakit/index.html) I don't have one, but I'm going to make one very shortly.
Who has a "72 hour kit", or some other similar preparation set aside in the even of a major catastrophe?
I'm talking about:
A global epidemic (we're overdue according to historians)
The eruption of a super volcano (again, overdue according to scientists)
Mass climate change from global warming
Overpopulation
Asteroid impact
Nuclear holocaust
Oh, and if you do have one, explain what's in your kit.
If not, explain why not.
Global epidemic- probably the most likely event. As viruses and bacteria become more resistant to current antibiotics, the best one can do is to avoid taking antibiotic pills unless necessary. They would then have a better chance to work when absolutely needed. Not fun, but the only way to force your body to develop antibodies naturally such as elderly persons who are not susceptible to the H1M1 virus. Global epidemics are not predictable nor cyclical. Any historian who states that we are 'overdue' for an epidemic is a fraud.
Super volcano eruptions are also not predictable nor cyclical. No scientist who examines the geological history of our planet can conclude that an eruption is overdue. We have the Long Valley caldera 760,000 years ago, the Toba eruption 74,000 years ago, the Yellowstone caldera 640,000 years ago... in fact there are only 7 super volcanoes on Earth. If you can tell us which one is overdue and why, then you win the Nobel prize and more. Name the scientist. Chances of a super volcano eruption in your lifetime = <1%
The actual statistics regarding global warming are inconclusive and highly disputable. Before you fall into false fears, at least educate yourself on both sides. The key to a greenhouse effect is not carbon dioxide but water vapor in the atmosphere. We know this from a simple study of the geological history of Venus. Be wary of persons such as Al Gore who is set to make multibillions from the global warming topic from investments. Sometimes in our world, money creates corruption and deception. The winter of 2009/10 was one of the coldest on record. Chances of global warming effects within your lifetime = <1%.

Overpopulation is often hyped to persons who live in large cities who immediately buy into it without conducting any research. Here is a true stat you can look up: The entire population of the world could be placed into the state of Texas and families in the entire world could be given a 2000 square foot home on a 40 by 100 foot lot. Odds of overpopulation affecting you in your lifetime = <1%.
Asteroid impact risks must be looked at with logic and reason. Not fear and mysticism. For the killer asteroid subject, we turn to NASA NEO jpl project which plots the trajectories of all known asteroids. Asteroids have been slamming into planets and the Sun and getting kicked out of our Solar System for 4.5 billion years now. This is a very long time which means most of the larger dangerous debris has disappeared long long ago. Due to their size, NONE of the asteroids between Mars and Jupiter pose any threat to Earth. The handful of outer asteroids which may one day impact Earth are very closely observed and tracked. In the next 100 years (at the very least), NO apocalyptic asteroid will impact Earth.
Nuclear holocaust- well... I do not have my hand on any button. Therefore, I have no control. Likewise, I have no control over a car crash, heart attack, stroke, cancer, or getting killed by a bolt of lightning. These are the true threats to ones life.
I have no kit. My kit does not contain any fear of the unknown or the uncontrollable events called life. My kit contains no thoughts of the holocaust or Armegeddon or any of the latest fear-mongering fads.
Funny thing is... I still go through my life with a carefree smile and a pleasant enjoyment of what is. Not what-ifs or what-could-be. Living a life in fear is not living. If you have a kit by your bedside so you can sleep at night, you are already dead.
