Assembling a First Aid Kit?
I am assembling a first-aid kit for my bag (for use at school in emergencies only), and I would like to know what people think as the 5 most important things they would include in a first-aid (or general aid) kit. By general aid I mean perhaps other things like painkillers and various other medicines. However the items cannot be big since I only have a small bag. Any suggestions, and prices?
I'm assuming it's for you because unless you're a first-aider you shouldn't be attempting to help others (it's nice that you want to, but sometimes untrained people do more harm than good and as a first-aider I'd rather you help in another way by say keeping others out of the area than trying to help the patient when you don't know what you're doing)
On a call out, it really depends on if I know the situation or not, but if I don't, then ten essentials that go in my smaller first aid bag are:
1. Gloves
2. Face shield
3. Gauze
4. Antiseptic wipes
5. Micro pore tape
6. Triangular bandages
7. Strapping for sprains
8. Eye pads
9. Revive aids
10. Survival sack
With regards to your first-aid kit:
Anti-septic wipes (small and always useful)
Band-aids of all sizes
Strapping for sprains
Micropore tape
and Gauze would be my choice.
Also as a side note if you find yourself bleeding and without anything to stem the flow, use your hand and apply pressure hard, it doesn't matter if they are clean or dirty, the germs on your body are the germs your body is used to and you'll do no harm introducing them to the wound. Same goes for someone you find who is bleeding and you have no way to stem the blood, hold their hand over the wound and apply pressure.

ISRAEL FINDS EXPLOSIVE CHEMICALS IN EU AID BAGS
JERUSALEM (Reuters) – Israel said on Saturday it had recently seized a truck carrying chemicals used to make explosives hidden in bags marked as European Union aid for the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip.
The army said 6.5 tonnes of potassium nitrate were in bags marked as sugar from the European Union for Palestinians in the coastal enclave.
“We are looking into this report,” said an EU official in Israel. “If it is found to be accurate, this is an illegal act that should be condemned.”
The cargo in a Palestinian truck was traveling in the occupied West Bank and seized several weeks ago at an Israeli checkpoint, the army said.
EXPLOSIVES FOUND IN “HUMANITARIAN” AID TO GAZA
Israel Airport Authority workers discovered two tons of explosive material intended for Gaza-based terrorists. The explosives were discovered in a truck earmarked for humanitarian aid at the Kerem Shalom crossing.
The incident was the second of it's kind in less than a month. In late December IDF soldiers discovered 6.5 tons of potassium nitrate hidden in sacks marked “sugar” earmarked for needy Arabs in Gaza.
EU CONDEMNS USE OF PHONY SUGAR BAGS TO CONCEAL CHEMICALS IN WEST BANK
The European Union has denied any connection to bags that Israel said were marked as containing EU-donated “sugar,” but were actually filled with bomb-making chemicals bound for the Gaza Strip. EU spokeswoman Alix deMauny said the bloc distributes its food aid through UN agencies, rather than directly, and does not export any sugar to Gaza. The Israeli army said on Saturday that it seized 6.5 tonnes of potassium nitrate aboard a Palestinian truck travelling through the occupied West Bank en route to Gaza. Potassium nitrate can be used to make explosives and power homemade rockets. The EU is the largest provider of humanitarian assistance to the Palestinians.
My Wife was a Combat Medic for 7.5 years. Among her many duties as a Medic she would work various ceremonies, and parades. An FLA (Field Ambulance) was always on hand, but aid bags and equipment for the vehicles were not. Many a time she was asked, by other soldiers, what she was going to do in a serious emergency since she had no equipment. “call 911″ she would always answer.
