Where is the safest place in a 2 story apartment while a big earthquake?
I have heard the safest place is in a doorway but my apartment has a lot of cracks and that alone makes me nervous.
While and earthquake would it be better to run outside?
I was even told if I am sleeping and an earthquakes hits to stay in bed since it is away from the windows.
The myth that the safest place is in a doorway, came from a picture of a house that was completely collapsed with the exception of a doorway, but in reality it is no safer than the rest of the house, it was just that in this case the house was not built well by todays standards. If you are upstairs, you probably wont be able to run outside if the earthquake is large enough, remember, the ground is moving, so the best option is under a sturdy table away from tall furniture windows or glass, or things that can fall on you. If you live in an earthquake prone area, it is best to create an area like this now and practice getting to it. Running outside is dangerous because it takes valuable time to get to the door which may istelf already be jammed due to the movement of the building, and outside there are things that can fall on you such as powerlines or brick facad's or glass. Unless the building you live in is very old and weak, it will probably withstand a larger earthquake than you think, those cracks mean it has probably been through many already. The greatest danger is from things like furniture that can fall on you. Ultimately, being in a major earthquake will never be safe, but the more you do to prepare for it, the safer and wiser you will be.
