i want to know some new disaster preparedness plans for earthquake?
I was recently at a class that was offered by the American Red Cross and from it I learned that your need to have a plan, create a survival kit that will have the basics for what you need to survive for at least three days and get involved with your community to get trained in first aid, CPR, search and rescue, etc. and help your neighbors to get prepared. I've included a link with additional information.
I also heard recently on the radio from someone who had done some research on who survives earthquakes, that you shouldn't get UNDER a table, desk or bed like we've been told, but that you should lie NEXT to it. He claimed that the research has shown that most survivors after a building collapse are between rows of desks in a school room or next to a counter or table. Apparently when the ceiling falls down and debris falls and collapses an object like a table, desk or bed creates a gap or pocket next to it that usually provides more safety than getting directly under the object.

texting is *very* useful in quakes, because the time it takes to send a text message is so small that it gets through an overloaded system. i checked in with my parents and a bunch of friends after an earthquake in taiwan several years ago, after spending 20 minutes unsuccessfully trying to get a call to go through. disaster preparedness 101 stuff, really.
