Why do a lot of military and survival sites tell you to get ready for disaster?
There is an increasing number of sites that tell you to be ready for disaster or civil unrest by putting together basic survival kits and what not. Do you think something might happen? For some reason, none of these supplies recommended include guns....Wouldn't those be the most important thing to have?
Disaster is indeed coming. It is common knowledge among the intelligentsia that this culture cannot endure.
Because of the very large population, when our present civilization falls (as all civilizations must), the highest probability is that it will crumble more or less all at once. That is, within a time span of a few months.
Firearms may help but the most pressing needs will be food, water, shelter, medicine and bandages. In northern climes heating fuel will also be a life or death necessity.
Example:
Of the many scenarios, assume a major epidemic sweeps the country (or world). It could be SARS, Ebola or even something far simpler. Millions would die and most survivors (including truckers) would stop going to public places for fear of catching. With no food being brought into the cities, desperation would come within weeks.
What would you do to save your starving family? Desperate people do desperate things. Imagine trying to survive in a large city where everyone is starving. Would you join neighbors or friends and start searching for food in other people's houses? Or would you watch your children die, one after another?
This situation has occurred many times in history (though not on as large a scale) so peoples reactions are well documented.
There are many other things that could start the ball rolling toward the breakdown of civilization. They all end up with individuals or families trying to survive on their own.
Do you know how to grow enough crops to survive? Do you know how to make polluted water drinkable? Could you defend your family from gangs that go looting from door to door?
