dog first aid kits What are some human meds you can give to a dog?
We're making an animal first aid kit because we're going on a long hiking/camping trip this weekend, and I need to know what (if any) human meds you can give a dog (she's about 60lbs) if something were to happen - god forbid it does, but we wanna be prepared. Something for pain, something like Benadryl to stop bug bites, etc. etc.. All that good stuff.
Thanks in advance.
I would be very careful about taking advice like this from the internet. We do not know what meds your dog is allergic to and some people just give bad advice. I would consult your vet. He/she should be more that happy to help you.
However, you can use famodadine found by stomach aids. It is good for nausea. Can give one tablet for a dog your size. A coated aspirin will do for pain. Do not use Tylenol it will kill your dog. Do use advil or anything other than aspirin. Make sure the aspirin is coated. For diarrhea, take a bag of white rice to boil. WHite rice and boiled chicken or beef helps diarrhea. He could also have a teaspoon of pepto but not with the famodadine. Benedryl is good for itching & allergies. Call your vet for proper dosing. I cannot remember the dose for Benedrl. I can tell you my 18lb dogs gets about a teaspoon. My larger English bully gets 1 tablet of Benedryl. You should have your dog on flea & tick control so bites should not be a big issue. Cortisone cream can help itching bites or spots. Do not put cortisone on a wound it impedes healing. Take some neosporin. It is safe for minor abrasions.
Make sure you take a lot of fresh water for her. Dogs overheat quickly. If she is getting too hot, the best way to cool them is to apply water to the chest area.
just peoples thoughts how necessary it is to have a dog first aid kit because i have my puppy (5 months) and i was just wondering if i should get one or not. And if i should which would you recommend and where i can i get it.
Good question! Yes, you should have a first aid kit and know how to use it. You can buy one made up, or make one yourself. I would include Benadryl, Neosporin (or similar antibiotic ointment), gauze pads and bandages, a thermometer, and hydrogen peroxide. If you live in an area where heat stroke is a problem, you should also have some alcohol. Ask your vet's office what they would recommend - basically anything you might need for minor emergencies or while getting the dog to the vet for a more serious emergency. Also get a book on how to treat common emergencies.
I also try to have water and a dog bowl in the car at all times, because you never know when an emergency will arise.

I have the same on and love it . . . great for kits of all types!
As always, many thanks for the shout out
I had to watch this twice because I am the “bag man” and there is nothing better than vacuum bagging!
