When do aftershocks become earthquakes?
I keep reading about the damaging aftershocks from the earthquake in Chine. I was wondering how much time needs to pass before these quakes become stand alone. Or are there other factors involved - size, location, etc? Thank you very much.
Aftershocks are earthquakes.
They are called aftershock because they are the smaller EQs that usually follow a larger quake.
The ones occurring recently in China can still be called aftershocks because they are caused by the same tectonic activity that caused the main quake.

Earthquake aftershocks?
Could someone give me detail on the extent to which aftershocks are 'counted'. E.g. if they occour within a week after a big earthquake in the same region will they be counted, or will they not? Likewise would they have been counted historially, e.g. 60 years ago?
Aftershocks only "count" if they are large enough. Since most aren't, then historically a record really isn't kept too long for them (the USGS lists all quakes on its website, but only for awhile, usually until enough other quakes happen to bump the others off the page), just the record of the main quake. People generally assume it was followed by aftershocks anyways.

I totally agree with you. I think there are a lot of what I call Backwards Christians in this world. They say they live their lives without any sin but saying that Haiti deserved this horrific disaster of mother nature, thats terrible! I absolutely look down on people who say they deserved it or it was a punishment by God,
