how to reduce the earthquake damage on a building by its structure?
this is a project on science the teacher asked us to create a model of a building structure that has modifications so that it may lessen the effects of earthquake
Most simple buildings used to be built without shear resistance. What is commonly used now is to triangulate the structure using K braces and diagonals. The triangle reinforces against the shear force which is the primary way earthquakes destroy buildings.

Haiti Earthquake Damage
Did any earthquake damage go to the Dominican Republic?
Hi, I was wondering whether or not the Dominican Republic was mostly unaffected by the quake that just hit. I know that both Haiti and the Dominican Republic share one island but I've heard nothing in the Dominican Republic. Also, what kind of terms are the two countries on?
I haven't heard of any damage, and it is unlikely for there to be any damage, though I'm sure that they felt it.
The strength of damaging seismic wave falls of quite quickly with distance, even just going from the Haitian epicenter and into the Dominican Republic. Further, most of the major cities of the DR are farther east, out of the highlands of Hispaniola.
Hispaniola is the name for the whole island. It comes from Columbus' naming it "La Española" then being translated into a Latin text - then quickly to English and French. Thus, Hispaniola.
But I'm off track.
It's about 200 miles from the epicenter to any major DR cities. Damaging waves don't go that far. I live in San Diego and was there for the 1994 Northridge quake, and didn't have anything more impressive than feeling a quake, only about 100 miles away. Same for Santa Barbara up north. It just really can't be hurt that badly that far away.
As far as international relations, they've never been very good. However, the DR is allowing relief aircraft to use their airports and ships to unload at (available) docking facilities. There has been one major Red Cross convoy to cross the border today (or yesterday - Friday or Saturday).
