What type of damage can result from an earthquake?
and...What types of materials (bottled water, canned foods, flashlight, etc.) are important to have stored in case of an earthquake and why it is important to have these materials?
You're house can be so damaged that you can't go back inside. The overpasses and bridges might be out so you might have to walk home.
5 gallons of water per person, can opener, canned food that can be eaten cold (if you're hungry enough), baby formula should you need it, medications. The whole 40 page list is attached, although I've seen one page posters.
If you want to be kind, you can double what you need so you can share.
When a large part of a city is down, it may take a week for city services to be back up or even for emergency personnel to get to your area. The red cross leaders will have problems of there own getting set up, so you may be a week on your own.

The damage of the crashes did not cause the buildings to collapse. Failure of supports due to fire caused it. And when the supports failed, the buildings pancaked. It is due to something called gravity.

This is absolutely false, the location of most damage depends on the rock type in the area and how the earthquakes waves travel through it. A good example of this is the 1989 Loma Prieta quake in California (which I was in)
The epicenter was in Aptos but the most damage was done ~70 miles to the north in San Fransisco's marina district. The marina district was built on landfill right on the ocean, the loose wet ground liquefied (in a process called liquefaction) causing many of the buildings to sink (like in quicksand) and collapse.
