What is the Dutch Govt's response to Haiti's earthquake disaster?
I guess the Dutch have Saint Maarten in the Carribbean and Aruba and the Netherlands Antilles.
But what are Dutch ties with Haiti like? How are people in the Netherlands saying about what happened in Port-au-Prince?
The gouvernment has already offered several million Euro for emergency help, and a team of searchers with dogs is one their way to the airport (or already in flight.)
For the reporting on the radio it is the normal thing, after the first mentioning of the number of lives lost the second line is 'and 4 Dutch are being missed'.
But the Dutch charities have opened their collective bank acount for gifts of all Dutch, (one number, 555, so all the money is there to be used as soon as it comes in, and not devided over several accounts.)
As a nation the Dutch do not have much of a connection with Haiti, but a lot of Dutch have ties because of visits, or just feel that help is needed.

What was the worst disaster caused by an earthquake?
The 1556 Shaanxi earthquake or Hua County earthquake is the deadliest earthquake on record, killing approximately 830,000 people. It occurred on the morning of 23 January 1556 in Shaanxi, China. More than 97 counties in the provinces of Shaanxi, Shanxi, Henan, Gansu, Hebei, Shandong, Hubei, Hunan, Jiangsu and Anhui were affected.[1] A 520 mile-wide area was destroyed and in some counties, sixty percent of the population was killed.[2] Most of the population in the area at the time lived in artificial caves in loess cliffs, many of which collapsed during the disaster.::

Yes, it would be simpler to not live in disaster prone areas like California, Mexico City, or Japan, for that matter. But humans are everywhere and there's no relocating the ones that are there – think of it as a kind of Darwinism (survival of the fitest). As long as we're talking about what to do to survive, don't get in your car or on a plane either…
