What should the US do during foreign tragedies such as the earthquake in Haiti?
It seems that every time there's an emergency the US gets slammed for everything it does. Would the world prefer the US just toss money at the corrupt leaders of some of these countries and watch it be spent on palaces and private armies. I get that people don't like to have the military on their soil but how is a humanitarian aid worker supposed to deal with rioting, looting and all the violence that almost always occurs during these catastrophes? Isn't tolerating the military a small price to pay for getting the millions in aid that comes with it?
I think you've answered all the questions yourself. Of course the U.S. should respond to natural disasters of that magnitude, regardless of the country. It's the only humanitarian thing to do. We get slammed for being too Imperialistic and bellicose but when we respond to tragedies like this we also get slammed. So we're damned if we do and damned if we don't. We also need military presence at these natural disasters to restore civility and protect against looting and rioting. To respond to these foreign disasters shows that we are truly a nation of empathy and vigilance.

What number do i call in Sydney if i feel an earthquake and want to find out about it/ report it?
It sounds crazy but i'm sitting at home watching tv, and i'm Pretty sure i just felt an earthquake at approx 9.40pm. i live on northern beaches, in sydney, so that's Pretty bizarre, but both my parents and i are Pretty darn sure that's what it was...
so who do i call to find out if that's what it was, or report it or something? i don't think i should call 000 as it's not an emergency. is there another number for this sort of thing?
The national telephone number for all emergency services in Australia including Ambulance, Fire, and Police is "000", or "112" if calling from a digital mobile phone.
You can call them and state in the beginning of the call that " its not an emergency call" and that you have felt an earthquake and wanted to report it.

I am just a lay person, but it seems to me that you did everything you were physically able to do.
You warned that there had been an earthquake – the biggest ever in the history of your knowledge.
You warned that the sea waves would rise to great height.
You told people to be prepared to get out fast.
You could not start yelling "tsunami!!" If you did not have the means to actually KNOW one was coming.
You did everything you were able to do, and probably a lot more than most would have done in your place.
It is very hard to step out and say for sure something is going to happen if you have no proof or instrumentation to show it. If it does not happen you would lose all credibility for the future confidence of your citizenry.
You did the very best you could do. Rest easy.
If Katrina is any indication, FEMA is the last thing you should count on to save your sorry hide. If you don't have an earthquake/emergency preparedness kit you're in a sorry state of denial.

BUT, people turn a blind eye to those they follow and follow blindly those who will make them "feel" safe.

They are very good sheople….I am sure they mean well….but I just don't think that they know any better.
I think that it is sad that in the United States this is happening and people have been so dubmed down and brainwashed that they don't even see it.
I feel sorry for my son and the world that we are leaving for him.
