Would it be possible to feel a magnitude 1.4 earthquake about 26 miles away?
I live on the third floor of my building - a while ago, I thought I felt shaking. When I looked it up, I found that there had been a magnitude 1.4 earthquake about 26 miles away, but that seems really small for it to have affected me. Was it just a coincidence, or could I have actually felt it?

Yes, but that would be very minute. If you live near the San Andreas fault, you're gonna feel a much bigger one than 1.4. I live near it; if you pray for me, I will pray for you!

Earthquake magnitude in Richter scale is not directly connected with the real damage. The real damages can be expressed in terms of intensity scale of Mercalli.But various factors decides the damages. They are
1.How far you are from the epicenter,
2.What was the depth of Focus point
3. What was the type of buildings,
We are mistaking that taller buildings are more vulnerable for damages.But it is not true.The earthquake frequency should not match with the natural frequency of the buildings.
4.There are cases like in Japan where many buildings were in tact for earthquake of Richter scale eight and most of the buildings in Italy collapsed for even 6.3 earthquakes.
5. The sandy foundation soil will induce the amplification and liquefaction that causes more damages.
6.The construction method to withstand earthquake motion will help to avoid more damages.
