How is an earthquake's magnitude calculated?

I know that scientists use a Richter scale, but do they only use one? Are there other factors they use to gauge the strength of an earthquake?

There are other scales but the Richter scale is used almost exclusively. Read this article at Wikipedia for more information, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richter_scale

Why do we measure an earthquake's magnitude?

I'm doing a Science paper and I came across a puzzling question to me. Why DO scientists measure an earthquake's magnitude? D: Thanks.

To monitor the seismic strength, force released ,activity, to calculate how much remaining stress may be there and when the next earthqukae may struck at that place and its magnitudes can be approximately decided & to mark the falt lines.

The Moment Magnitude Scale was developed in the 1970s to succeed the 1930s-era Richter magnitude scale.

The goal of the Richter scale was to quantify medium-sized earthquakes between magnitude 3.0 and 7.0 in Southern California. This scale was based on the responses of seismographs and their distance from the epicenter. Because of this, there is an upper limit on the highest measurable magnitude and all large earthquakes will have a Local Magnitude of around 7. The Local Magnitude's estimate of earthquake size is also unreliable for measurements taken at a distance of more than about 350 miles from the earthquake's epicenter.

The Moment Magnitude (Mw) scale was introduced in 1979 by Caltech seismologists Thomas C. Hanks and Hiroo Kanamori to address these shortcomings while maintaining consistency.

You shouldn't be worried the earthquake was a 4.4 and earthquakes in Southern California are no higher than 5.2 at the latest
