How many times has the "Hollywood" sign been destroyed in disaster movies?
I can recall seeing it destroyed in an earthquake movie and by a tornado in "The Day After Tomorrow"
Any other instances?

That is a great question!
I think it is safe to say it got wiped out in:
Independence Day (but it wasn't seen that I know of)
The Day After Tomorrow (as you already mentioned)
10.5 (Earthquake movie)
1941 (not a disaster movie, but the sign said Hollywoodland and the LAND got blown up by the coastal defense gun (I think). Actually, just found out that it was John Belushi as the P-40 pilot that destroyed the LAND part of the sign.

Superman, 1978, the sign leans during the earthquake in the movie
Earthquake, 1974, the letters fall down the mountain side
The Wizard of Speed and Time, 1989, the sign gets turned from HOLLYWOOD to WHOLLYWOOD
The Rocketeer, 1991, the LAND part is destroyed when the villain crashes into it
Escape from L.A., 1996, forest around the sign (and the sign?) is on fire
Mighty Joe Young, 1998, the huge gorilla throws an 'O' from the sign

It was really effective during the earhtquake scene....very real feeling for that era of film. They were trapped in the underground parking lot...
Earthquake (1974) had a long list of stars but the cast didn't include Steve McQueen.
