Why do natural disasters like the earthquake in Haiti only seem to strike poor undeveloped countries?

They strike developed countries aswell, the earth doesn't care, its that there is usually many more casualties in the under-developed countries due to poor building codes, standard of living, etc... all in all they just aren't as well prepared as a more developed country. For example India gets throttled by major earthquakes and India is a well developed country. It's all where the tectonic activity amongst the plates is..

Haiti Earthquake was NOT a Natural Disaster

In regards to natural disasters, why is the Lower Mainland of BC not a very safe place to live?

Also, which one of the natural disasters would be the most devastating for Vancouver, Richmond BC? (flooding, earthquake, aftershocks, tsunami, liquefaction?) Please provide the most devastating disaster and and explanation!

You get landslides and avalanches in the mountains - example Purcell Mountains. Wild fires are always a threat as well but I think the disaster one has to worry more about will be the earthquakes. There have been a few large ones but most are smaller tremors. Because of the location, earthquakes in other areas such as Alaska and California could also impact on the southern areas of BC. Not only can the earthquakes themselves be a threat but its the possibility of a tsunami.
Flooding really isn't that big of a problem although the Frasier R has flooded and done considerable damage but it doen'st happen very often at all.

It is hard to pick the most devasting disaster. In terms of death or damage??
Here is a site that list the various disasters: You may have to google a couple of the places to see if they are in fact in the southern portion of the province.

Natural calamity means natural disaster which is caused by nature. Every year many country falls victim to various natural calamities. They are flood, earthquakes & many other natural calamities. The effects of the natural calamities beggar description. They leave a vast trail of devastation. The affected people & animals suffer untold sufferings. They cause heavy damage to our life & properties. Houses are destroyed, cattle are washed away, crops are greatly damaged and trees are uprooted. Thousands of people and other animals remain without food for many days. The after effect of some natural calamities are more serious. Famine breaks out. Many people & animals die for want of food. The prices are all necessary things go up. Many dangerous diseases like cholera, typhoid and dysentery etc. break out in an epidemic form. By raising public awareness and taking necessary precautionary measures and steps natural calamities can be prevented. The government and all the conscious citizens should come forward with concerted efforts to prevent natural calamities.
