Earthquake in California in August that was all over the news, where was it and its magnitude?
Hey you guys. I'm teaching about Tocqueville tomorrow and I remember the earthquake that occurred in California in August. I especially remember all of the hype CNN made about it, trying to make it much bigger and worse than it was.
This is an excellent modern-day example of what Tocqueville said in the chapter "Why American Writers and Orators Often Use an Inflated Style" of his book.

"At 11:42 am on Tuesday, July 29, 2008, the greater Los Angeles metropolitan area experienced its largest earthquake in years as a magnitude 5.4 event occurred 8.5 miles beneath the Chino Hills. This earthquake was felt across much of southern California, and as far away as Las Vegas, Nevada."

First, California is not bankrupt due to natural disasters…
Second, the US has had as many if not more disasters than Haiti
Finally, the poverty stems from lack of education, lack of resources, lack of leadership and lack of natural resources that could be sold to other countries who would then care enought to help them, go into business partnerships with them or invade and overthrow them..
