What should i know about earthquakes?

Experts predicted that my country will experience a chain of earthquakes in the near future, in fact the first one took place two days ago and it was quite noticeable. I've been checking some online earthquake safety guides, but i couldn't find two that matched. Furthermore, there are people saying that some of the procedures written there are myths. I want to ask you a few questions: is it safer to hide under a solid table in case of an earthquake rather then lying down next to it? Also, if the earthquake strikes while I'm in bed should i roll down or stay there? Thank you for reading and sorry for being a little... i don't know.... tense.

makes a lot of sense actually, there is probably a tipping point: a place where a rise in population is due to an increase in urbanization, tall skyscraper-esque living situations where earthquake safety is thought about. pakistan (and haiti, i assume) suffered by being at the upper range pop. density wise for rural living situations.

Being from California, I feel it is my duty to inform you of proper earthquake safety guidelines – when the big one hits you must IMMEDIATELY run under a doorframe or dive under a small child's classroom desk and cover your head with your arms. According to the California public school system, these actions will save your life. You're welcome in advance.

I'm assuming John then went to the hospital for the golf club sized dents in his head.

I can't answer your second question about the buildings being safe in Manila, but I can answer your title question.

To retrofit a building in terms of seismic safety means that the buildings have been changed or updated to make them either more safe during an earthquake or to more resistant to being damaged in an earthquake, maybe both.
