   FYI: I had some earthquake training and the doorway thing is a common misconception. It is not in fact a safe place to be. Probably safer than under a large chandelier or in front of a 10 foot bookcase filled with steal weapons, but your #1 choice should still be to get under something sturdy- Kitchen tables are usually a good bet, office desks, large chairs, turned over sofa, etc. That and the importance of having earthquake survival kits around are probably the most important things I picked up from the training. Of course I still do not have a survival kit adn after the earthquake that morning I got up since my alarm was set for 5am anyway. Oh and one thing I remember from my childhood in socal is after every earthquake my father would immediately go shut off the gas to the house and then run to the bathroom and pull the drain and start filling the tub. I always thought it was strange he liked to take a bath after what I guess would be a dirty earthquake, but I soon learned that this was so we had some drinkable water in case the big one hit and the water was shut off. Smart thinkin pops!
