Why is knowledge of vibration important in understanding the destructive power of earthquakes, the tuning circuit in a radio receiver or the timing mechanism in a digital watch?

Because vibrations are the only things that can measure what a plate tectonic is doing which are plates under the earths surface that move around and sometimes crash and rub against each other. This causes a vibration which can tell whether or not there is going to be an earthquake

Why do earthquakes disrupt cell phone reception?


Our family is thinking about getting rid of our land line phones and replacing them with all cell phones. We were thinking about earthquakes affecting the reception. But then we thought that if the satellite is in space and the earthquake is on land, then how does it affect service if the satellite is so far away from it.

Most cell phones are not satellite phones. Typically cell phones connect to cell towers (similar to a radio tower in idea). These cell towers would then connect to land-lines locally. The only reason I can think that earthquakes might cause cell phone problems is that an earthquake might damage the towers or the lines.
