   QCI,
   Sorry about that. I just thought the post might do someone some good so I reran it. We have emergency kits in the house and the cars. Having them does help you feel at ease in bad weather.

   1) A properly trained drug detecting dog will not incorrectly find something
   2) sounds like he was only being lazy or wanted a reason to search, if the dog had alerted that he had found something then they would have sent him in the car, and on the outside of the vehicle the dog is then trained to paw at the place he detects it or lay down in front of it (most common 2 technics)
   3) It is probably cause however if the trunk is locked and not reachable from the backseat (a lever system on it, or open trunk like a SUV) then they need a search warrant to search the glove box and trunk if they are locked unless the dog detected directly there, other wise they need your permission.

   According to current case law (not Carroll), this stop is authorized because the courts have essentially said that the 100 mile zone near the border is the same as the border.

   This is highly controversial, of course. Many millions of people live in this zone. So while your initial stop was technically legal, it might not be truly constitutional.

   As for the dog, it is enough to establish probable cause. However, it is questionable whether the dog actually alerted. There have been cases when agents have claimed the dog alerted as an excuse to search your car.

   And if they ask if they can your trunk, then you can absolutely refuse. This doesn't mean they won't find an excuse. However if something does pop up, they'll have to justify why they looked there rather than being able to go there with your permission.

   There is a good video of a guy (who is a bit of an activist) refusing to hand over documents or allow them to search. He filmed it himself. The BP agents claimed that the dog alerted but refused to bring the dog over again, even at the request of the DPS officer. He gets tasered in the end because of it and ends up with 13 stitches.
