Emt Ems Fire

How do EMT shifts work?
At least for your area and your occupation, be it fire/ems, Hospital, private ambulance, etc. What is the rotation like? How long is each shift? Are the supervisors flexable at all with needing specific days on or off?
All depends on where you work and what the call volume is like in the area. For me, I live in a pretty rural area with anywhere from 5 to 20 calls per shift, so the scheduling is arrange as 2 days on, 2 days off, 3 days on. And the flexibility of those days all depends on the supervisor. I've dealt with both ends of the spectrum, so it's difficult to say.

EMT Class, Augusta Fire Department
EMT or Firefighter?
want to join a volunteer service in my town, but I don't know if I want to become an EMT for our Rescue Squad or a firefighter (two separate depts. in my town.) I'm 16 years old, and eligible for both depts.
In my town the vol. Rescue Squad covers from 8PM to 6AM on weekdays, and 24 hours on weekends (the paid EMS takes over from 6AM to 8PM on weekdays)
The vol. fire dept. covers 24/7, except I would not be able to respond to "fire calls" or during school or after 10PM on school nights.
I don't know which to choose. Which do you think would be better? I have interest in both, and both are accepting applications. If anyone could give me any input on your opinions, or info on training requirements, info on positions etc. that'd be great.
I'd like to become a police officer when I grow up... would either one of these depts. better benefit me more if I become a cop?
Thanks for your help!
Honestly this comes down to if you are better in dealing with the physical dangers and heat of firefighting, or if you are better at dealing with the trauma of the EMT.
I know people who have done both, and they are very very different.
If you are going police both would be useful but in different ways. (Though EMT might be a bit more useful over all, as you will likely be dealing with emergency medical until the ambulance arrives in some cases in the police.)
By your schedule you would have more time for the firefighting, as the scheduling you give would give you pretty much only 2 hours on weekdays and the weekends available for the EMT.

JezeThank you for clarifying your reasoning on Medical Help by FD vs EMS.Wouldn’t it be logical for the Fire Department to run next door in anon-call status, and use the EMS VEHICLES (which are properly equiped)to answer the call, when volunteers are unavailable?Oh … “This IS Stratford!”Logic?Public Interests?Responsible Safety and Health?Responible Budgeting?Responsible use of Public owned equipment?”SFD gets there in usually less than 5 minutes. But they simply don’t have the equipment to do much for a medical emergency.”-Yeah the Publicly owned equipment is parked next door to the $ 7 million Fire House that was supposed to cost under $ 2 million. The 2 non customed $900,000 total cost equipped Fire Trucks shouldhave cost $ 460,000 equipped (as BID $ 230,000 eqquipped non custom) That extra $ 440,000 no blogger writes about could have bought at least2 ambulances and split them between EMS + FIRE DEPT.-JEZE has increased scope of criticism, yet there are some places, JEZEappears to choose NOT to go and some people not to criticize?Am I inaccurate or is it just an oversight? (or lack thereof?)
“So on a 911 medical just call ask yourself would one question you rather see:
A Fire Fighter EMR show up at your door or an highly trained medically Professional?”
Speaking as a paramedic of 15 years, eight of which at the CCP license, and as a volunteer with fire departments for about 12 years, I want to see someone arrive AND LEAVE WITH ME QUICKLY for the hospital. Fire can do both, so can police (Baltimore, Maryland's State Troopers & NYC's ESU). The problem with EMS & Fire is both have adapted poorly and slowly. EMS puts too much stock in its “our advanced skills” and Fire in its “hero history”. Give me someone with symptom relief, ASA, Defib/AED and the absence of an inflated sense of self, solid triage and assessment capability, and I couldn't care less if it said, “Ladies Auxillary” on their shoulder.
