H.W HELP IN EARTHQUAKES AND TSUNAMIS !! GR.7 SCIENCE!!!PLS !!?

ok my science teacher wants us to hand 2 researches 1 about earthquakes and the other about tsunamis!! so here are the questions she wants us to answer:
Earthquakes

1. The most 3 destructive earthquakes in the world.
2. Where did the famous earthquakes occur?
3. Their source and their reason.
4. What deformation they caused to the earth?
5 . Can we predict earthquakes.
6. Solutions to decrease the harmful effect of earthquakes .
7. Your ideas too to reduce the effect of earthquakes.

Tsunamis

1. Where do tsunami waves happen?
2. Their causes.
3. How did they affect the nature?
4. How to reduce their damaging effect?
5. Can we predict a tsunami?
in the 1st question i mean what are the 3 strong types of earthquakes

One of the most destructive earthquakes to occur in recent history was the Boxing Day earthquake 2004 that occurred in the Indian Ocean. The earthquake was somewhere in the region of 8.2 on the Richter scale. This earthquake occurred in the sea and generated massive tsunamis which killed over 280,000 people. The tsunami that resulted from the earthquake is the main reason it was one of the most deadly earthquakes.

Another notable earthquake is the San Francisco Earthquake that occurred in 1906. This earthquake caused a massive fire in San Francisco, causing wide spread damage which almost ruined San Francisco for good. If it had not been for their mayor who was thought to be corrupt, San Francisco may not have been rebuilt.

Another earthquake for your project. The Chile Earthquake of 1960.

We cannot predict earthquakes.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earthquake_prediction

Earthquakes are caused by movements in the earth’s plates and usually occur at subduction zones. A subduction zone occurs at destructive plate boundaries also known as convergent plate boundaries. One plate slide under another (subducts). This movement generates heat which creates slipping. It is this slipping that causes earthquakes.

We can't totally earthquake proof everything but we can take steps to reduce the effects on buildings etc by better engineering methods.

Tsunamis

Tsunami waves occur in the sea. They are commonly caused by earthquakes but can also be caused by, Volcanic eruptions (volcanogenic earthquakes), landslides or rock and ice falls, and although very rare, can also be caused by meteor/asteroid impact.

Tsunamis can destroy habitats of animals and cause extinction in some animals. Tsunamis can also kill coral reefs and the life that resides in the reefs. Tsunamis also destroy human homes and can cause a mass loss of life.

We cannot predict when a tsunami will occur but we can monitor them when they occur by using sensors in the ocean. This helps us to issue warnings people to people so that they may move to higher ground, thus saving many lives. In some instances though, the tsunami can be triggered too close to land to issue enough warning.

You can find out more about tsunamis via this link:

This should give you lots of useful information for your assignment and will help you develop a deeper understanding of the subject.

I hope this helps.

Kind regards

Completely fascinating!! The seismic events of 1811-1812 are relatively obscured by the famous earthquakes in California, but the New Madrid quakes were at least as devastating. They certainly were among the largest ever recorded in the U.S. The “big one” in February is reported to have knocked down chimneys…in Maine.

If I may be so bold, another book of interest might be Jay Feldman's “When the Mississippi Ran Backwards”.
