Quake On New Madrid Fault Line Could Affect KC
When there is an earthquake, do all fault lines in that area move or crack?
Or do earthquakes start/originate per fault line?
For example, does the San Adreas fault move/crack when there's an earthquake at the San Fernando/Northridge fault?
Fault: crack in the crust of the Earth along which significant movement has occurred
Major faults like the San Andreas are more than one crack. There may be one crack on which most of the motion takes place, but there is also a network of anastomosing branches associated with it. Many of these would have movement during a major earthquake, but some would not because the stress was directed away from them and toward the ones that moved.
