EARTHQUAKES: Fault Lines and Earthquakes

Fault lines and earthquakes.?

I understand that most earthquakes occur on fault lines on tectonic plate boundaries; however, I see many occurring far from one of these (i.e. today's temblor in NE Nevada, far from the San Andreas Fault or any boundary of the North American plate).

How is this possible, and what explains it?

Actually, Nevada and the Basin and Range Province has many faults. The Basin and Range is sort of a "spreading center", with many pullapart type geological structures (normal faulting), due to the area undergoing what we call 'extension'. Extension is the opposite of compression.

Also, there has in the not-so-distant past been volcanic activity in parts of Nevada, and the movement of magma can cause earthquakes.
