why are my Californian bunnies (kits) dying?

My doe has had two litters of 8 and 7 respectively. In the first litter only 3 survived, in the second only 2 have survived so far. I chalked the mortality rate to doe inexperience in the first litter, but she's done so much better with her second litter yet there is still a really high mortality rate. I've tried to ensure they have enough shredded newspaper and fur to stay warm. I made a deep bowl for the babies and keep them all in a warm unused/quiet room in my home.
Only the largest kits survived in the second litter, but the smaller kits aren't peanuts. The first litter all kits were approx. same sized. Any ideas? Is this actually normal? I tried to save a few, but couldn't, even with gentle warmth and supplemental feeding.
Is this to be expected? I haven't been able to find any documents online to show what survival rate is typical.
Thanks!

For my rabbits nesting box I use hay and then dust free wood shavings on the top the mum rabbits then makes her nest of fur on top. When one of my mother rabbits died a day after having her babies I hand raised them I just left them in there nest their was 4 but one got diarrhoea and died. The other 3 survived and are all female. The wood shavings helps to keep them warm I fed them on a milk formula from my vet but some people use 50 to 50 full cream milk and strawberry yogurt (it has to be strawberry for the right vitamins and other nutrients). I had to feed them 4-6 times a day (I think) when they were young and then had to decrease this time as they got older. The mum rabbit will only feed them once a day as rabbits milk is very high in nutrients. Newspaper can cause dermatitis and can get wet easily then the babies would get cold and die, maybe that was your problem. Rabbits can suffer from heat stress. Mum rabbits also need a rest between litters to recover and gain strength.

I love your idea! I’m also really excited to see a “bridesman” included in your party.

We found after our first moderately long car trip with our 7 month old that stopping mid trip so we all can eat was a bad idea, she had fallen asleep and we took her into a restaurant. On our trip back we waited till late, ate before leaving and then drove 3 hours straight home, she slept the whole trip and kept sleeping when we got home and put her to bed. When my sister and I were younger my mom created survival kits for long trips. Crayons, coloring books, story books, small toys and games and the all important walkman with spare batteries. We may have been singing our own separate songs (out loud- over each other) but we were happy!
