Hygiene Shelter

Case study. what is the causative agent and the disease?
A young street person with the complaint of fever and leg pain was seen by an emergency room physician. The patient resided in a crowded housing shelter and did not practice good hygiene. A tentative diagnosis of trench fever was made, and laboratory studies were initiated. The mode of transmission for this disease is the body louse, which carries the infectious agent.
The disease is caused by the bacterium Bartonella quintana, found in the stomach walls of the body louse.
The onset of symptoms is usually sudden with high fever, severe headache, pain on moving the eyeballs, soreness of the muscles of the legs and back, and frequently hyperaesthesia of the shins.

Is it ok to keep a stray cat?
We have a stray cat that has started to hang around in our garden - it seems to have taken shelter under one of our large trees. It seems a very nervous cat(and old, i think - although I have nothing to back this up as I know nothing of cats, just an instinctive feeling...). I'm not allowed any pets anyway, but is it still ok to feed and maybe take it to the vets? It would never e allowed in the house, but it keeps hanging around. We also feed the birds in the garden, we were suspicious at first, but it doesn't seem to interested in them.
I have no experience of cats or any pets whatsoever, I am assuming it's a stray as it has no collar and looks a little dishevelled. It would be nice to look out for it, but I am also concerned for health and hygiene reasons also.
Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks.
it's a good idea to feed the cat and pop it to the vets. the cats protection are always looking for people to feed strays and if this cat keeps coming back its probably wants food etc and feels safe in your garden.
when you take it to the vets it will be scanned for a microchip if there is no chip then maybe take a photo of it and print some posters and put them up around where you live just to check it doesn't belong to anyone. also call your local cats protection and see if anyone has reported it missing and explain you are more than happy to keep it fed and keep an eye on it. it is NOT illegal to keep a stray cat if you have made an effort to find its owner.
don't expect to be able to pick up easily or stroke it, let it feel comfortable with you 1st. also leave plenty fresh water out for it. good luck, there should be more kind people like you!
remember you don't find a cat, a cat finds you x x x
