Why didn't the Dominican Republic get hit by the earthquake, only Haiti?

It's just weird, considering it's the same island and it was such a massive earthquake.

In the grand scheme, it wasn't a massive one. 7.0 is big but there have been many larger. DR is far enough away from the epicentre and has strong enough infrastructure that it wasn't affected.

Haiti was hit so hard because buildings were not built to withstand a strong earthquake and the epicentre was less than 20 miles from Port-au-Prince.

Chaos in Haiti as Huge Earthquake Hits Island

In December of 2004 an earthquake off the coast of what island caused a tsunami that killed over 200000 people

It was on the news all the time after it happened but I just can't seem to remember what island it was! please answer only if you know...

The island of Sumatra, in Indonesia.

A 1,600 km section of the tectonic plate boundary slipped during the earthquake, causing the ocean floor to suddenly move upwards and displace millions of tons of seawater. The resulting tsunami caused deaths as far away as South Africa.
