What was the magnitude and location of the world's largest earthquake?

I believe it happened in the 1960's...

Go to http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0763403.html for a chart on the ten largest earthquakes since 1900.

According to the chart, the May 22, 1960 moment magnitude 9.5 quake in Chile was the largest.

We don't know much about the size of quakes before then because we didn't have accurate seismometers to measure earthquakes.

What was the largest earthquake in Japan from 1900 to today ?

The Sanriku Earthquake of March 2, 1933 with Magnitude 8.4 is the largest earthquake to strike Japan.
but the most destructive was the kobe earthquake which lies in the southern part of Japan which caused billions of dollers worth of damage and destryed 80% of homes and industries which means the economy just dropped. it hapened at 5.46 in the morning which is why hundreds and thousands of people were killed as they were still asleep and the buildings and homes collapsed and caved in.

hope this helps

If this is the new Jerusalem what happens to the old one. Well it just disappears in a rush of water from the mediterranean sea into the dead sea 1.200 feet below sea level. It shall be triggered by the largest earthquake the world has ever felt. The fault line start at the rift valley in Africa and ends up the jordan river valley. The only way to escape is to head for the high places. But Jerusalem will be gone and there will be nothing left to fight over. Peace finally.
