How do you prepare for an EARTHQUAKE?
Is there anything specific you can do ?
Have an emergency supply kit handy, complete with non-perishable food, water, blankets, flashlights, first aid kit and a pre-paid cell phone. Also a safe place to go away from windows and falling objects. There's no 100% fail proof plan but it doesn't mean you can't try to prepare yourself.

Why is Japan one of the most prepared country for earthquakes?
Because Japan is cradled by two major fault lines (The Pacific Plate and Philippine plate) and both of them are sub-ducting below the plate that Japan itself is on. Therefore Japan is unavoidably going to recieve earthquakes and volcanic activity. Knowing this, and keeping in mind that second only to the US, Japan has massive amounts of technology, funding and scientists to put to the task of making earthquake resistant structures. Some of these are fracture and fatigue resistant roads and bridges, building foundations with shock absorbing capability and even their buildings in certain cities are made to particular heights so they are ideal for shaking in sync with the grounds shaking. Because Japanese are resourceful, intelligent and capable people they are best suited to prepare for these things.
