   But I wonder how much organic food you buy, and how much is packaged. Generally the only food waste I throw out is leftovers I'v kept for tomorrows luch and didnt end up eating.

   I eat very few processed foods, so my food waste isn't stuff I've cooked and not eaten it is things like the peels of produce. I don't have a lot of waste in general, I have a small garbage pail, maybe 3 gallons that I put my food waste in, I fill it a couple times a week. I have a worm composting bin, so some of it goes in there and the rest goes into the green waste. I get a lot of my food from farmers markets so there is a little more plant waste associated with them, carrot tops, onion and garlic tops, corn husks, etc. Sometimes I only use part of a plant like leeks, I often only use the lower half. We eat a lot of fruit so there are peels or cores or rinds.

   There are 2 reasons to avoid putting this into the landfill, one it is a wasted resource, like yard clippings etc, they can be turned into a great fertilizer and the other is we are opening a new landfill on average 1 per day in the US. In my lifetime we have more than doubled the amount of garbage we produce per person.

   Small efforts by many people make huge impacts. We need to quit thinking of each of these things as a little problem and realize that our waste in general is a huge problem that can be solved with little changes.
