I heard going to the most open space is the best thing, but that doesn't sound easy depending on where you are.
Generally I just watch the house shake. But the drill is to watch out for falling objects (this is why you want the open spaces). If you are indoors, you can stand in a doorway where the door frame is generally strong or you can get under a strong table. Be ready to shut off the gas in your house if a gas line breaks.

I have experienced the 9.3 earthquake on 26th Dec 2004 that has created the Tsunami. My earthquake alarm sensed the signal for an unusual time of 12 minutes 2 hours before Tsunami struck our coast.I am 2050 k/m away from Sumathra. I immediatly alerted the local T.V.Station to relay the alert message of probable high rise of sea water.But my warning was ignored by them.
