First off they'll need all the things to keep the car rolling, like spare tires, gas, extra wipers, wiper fluid, oil, cooler etc. You know, all the usual car things that either stops them from driving, or get them in trouble with authorities.
Then you'd have all the spares for their music equipment. You can't even imagine how many musicians who go on tour without extra spares of things like batteries, picks, strings, leads, adapters, drum sticks, effects etc.
Then you have all the legal papers, contracts, phone numbers and contact details to venues, managers, sound personnel and riggers, maps, parking requirements, check in times etc. They will need to think ahead of any possibility, like a break down of transportation, vanue closed down, no one showing up, no place to find sleep (possibility to sleep in the van?), things not being in place as promised (food, drinks, equipments etc), payment problems and what have you not.
When all this, which goes into getting the job done, is in place – then one can begin to consider the extra stuff.
It is indeed nice to have pre-stamped cards to send home, a computer to write and connect, an extra cellular phone and charger, green tea, lemon and honey for the voice, favorite candies, DVDs with their favorite bands/artists, full loaded mp3 player with their favorite music, gift vouchers for food and drinks, some PC games they enjoy, books and magazines, blankets and pillows, gift cards for men's clothing (guys never bring along enough underwear and there's some times hard to find a cleaner), sleeping aids and neck rests like the ones used in airplanes.
Other nice things to consider might be tha ability to make quick and simple hot meals by the car/roadside, or a small cooler unit designed for cars (cold soft drinks is always welcome). Perhaps a water heater to make cofee on board?
