What are good canned foods to save in your zombie survival kit?
The same kind of can goods that you might store away in case of bad weather. In other words, the same kind of food you eat now.
In a zombie situation you would need lots of it. Don't forget about water. There is a "3" rule. You can last 3 minutes without air, 3 days without water, and 3 weeks without food.
In hard times, much like many people are going though right now, it is a good idea to have a large supply of surplus food. Buying at a discount store will increase the amount of food you can purchase for the same amount of money. You can pay $1.19 for a can of corn or you can pay .49 cents for a can of corn. You can pay $2.59 for a one pound bag of beans or you can pay $1.19 for a bag of beans. Higher prices often just mean than a brand name was printed on the label.
If you are giving any serious thought to having any kind of food kit then make sure to rotate your stock. Keep it fresh. Otherwise when you really need it you may find it is six years out of date.
It may be a good idea to keep a journal or log book about your food supplies. A common entry may look like this:
12 cans peaches. Box labeled #17.
Cans labeled #1
Location: under bed in spare room.
Expiration date of cans: 6/14/12.
Date purchased: 8/10/10.
Price per unit: .89 cents. Total spent: $10.68 + tax.
Or:
4 cans green beans. Replacements for food eaten. Box labeled #9.
Cans labeled #7
Location: bedroom closet.
Expiration date of new cans: 10/6/13
Date purchased: 7/29/10
Price per unit: .59 cents. Total spent: $2.36 + tax.
In this manner you always know what you have, where it is, what is fresh and what needs to be eaten right away, how much it cost you compared to the last time- or even how much it cost compared to two years ago.
Of course we are talking about zombies so you aren't really going to do all of this. I have though. I've known hard times and the way things are going those hard times aren't very far away and could easily swing by my house with no notice.
My wife calls it "sensibly paranoid". I call it an insurance policy that we can eat. The hardest part is keeping her from going crazy with it and buying far more than we can store without turning the house into a warehouse.
