survival kits for teachers

What is a unique gift to give a third grade teacher for an end of the school year present?
I have been a parent volunteer since my oldest started kindergarten in 1984 and have helped with numerous end of the school year parties. My youngest is in 3rd grade and I think my creativity has taken a leave of absence (or just too tired). I am just not coming up with any ideas for a teacher present this year. What are some good teacher gifts that you can think of? Some of the things I have done in the past are gift certificates to restaurants, teacher stores, sporting events, book stores; fabric painted sweatshirts, tote bags, aprons with kids' names and handprints; flowers, plants, and trees; one year I did a summer survival kit with sunscreen, a book, a sun hat, etc, in a styrafoam cooler. All of these are thoughtful gifts and appreciated by teachers. Does anyone have other suggestions for truly unique gift ideas? Thanks!
I am a teacher and by far the nicest suggestion is a book with notes from the kids. You have certainly given wonderful presents in the past too. But no one can ever give the gift of real appreciation. I have many mugs, t-shirts, plants etc but the gifts I treasure and that I take out when I need a lift are notes from my students and a well worn little book given to me by a class over 22 years ago. I love all my gifts and feel grateful that people have taken time to select and give a gift when we are all so busy so I am sure anything would be fine...but a little book of notes from the kids...a priceless jewel!

i need ideas for cute but simple back to school gifts for teachers.?
my cheer leading squad is in charge of giving little gifts to the teachers every year and i have no ideas. we already did the survival kit thing. i need something different.
Key Lanyards, Colored chalk, great pens, coffee ( I kid you not buy a coffee maker for the teacher lounge and cans of coffee) Give each teacher an hour gift certificate that you come in and do whatever they need done.

Currently we are facing several potential tropical storms / hurricanes you Max have so effectively and expertly described. Right now it is the toss of the dice to some degree as to where some of these hurricanes may impact the Atlantic Seaboard or that of the Gulf Of Mexico shores. Either location can certainly cause a great deal of hardship and sorrow for residents of our great country.
My concern is that we are not as prepared for the potential threat as we should be. We have been lulled into a false sense of security over the past two years since we have not had active and / or intense hurricane seasons. This year is different. Even a 1% risk is too much when it is simple enough with a bit of effort to prepare low cost emergency survival kits for each member of the family household including our pets as well as emergency preparedness plans to escape out of harms way.
False security is just that FALSE! No one want to think about much less face the threat or reality of a hurricane disaster. It is much more difficult to face a hurricane when not prepared.
May I strongly suggest that tonight after you have helped with homework and bedtime stories and kissed the kids goodnight, that you take an hour and go over your emergency preparedness checklist and review your emergency preparedness kits. It is important to get expert information that Max Mayfield provides on current and pending weather conditions that can affect you and loved ones. But knowing about he weather is not enough when you can possibly be located in harm’s way.
It is vitally important to have solid disaster preparedness information. Know of at least 3 places outside your potential hurricane impact zone where you can ride out the wind and rain of a hurricane storm in safety. Know of private and public emergency shelter locations such as homes of family and friends as well as emergency shelters established by the local fire department or the American Red Cross.
Don’t gamble on your loved ones safety. Your actions tonight is the best gift of love and care you can give your family during any season of the year. Remember they are counting on YOU – please don’t let them down!

I’m guessing some kind of aluminum alloy (magnelium). Was only half kidding about the fire starting aspects of it though… it is used as fire starter in some emergency survival kits.It will definitely be interesting to see what comes out of this. Its a heck of an idea if someone will do the work necessary to bring something like this to mass market. Your write up about the possibilities of weight location transfer are intriguing.
Do not forget that John Ashcroft had The Spirit of Justice, that partially nude statue at the Justice Department, draped over because …a). God told him to.b). The image conjured obscene thoughts (lust)in his mind.b). It was the beginning of the cockroaches coming out of the gutter.c). the goons had just seated themselves in the oval office.d). all of the above.
