Just got certified as an EMT-B and i have been shopping around for a good complete medical/trauma/oxygen kit/kits to keep in my car. So far i have not found any kits that i wouldn't have to add extra stuff too, the best kit i have found is this:
So my question is this: Does any one know where to get a good kit? Do you have any recommendations on stuff that is needed in one? Finally do you know of a good kit and where can i get it?
First of all, congratulations on licensing up.
Look online at Galls, Bound tree, and other suppliers. I would get a good kit from Galls or another source and stock it myself. Half of what they put in a filled kit is useless. You will go through more band-aids than almost anything else.
I carry a few rolled bandages, hot and cold packs, 2X2s, 4X4s, 5X9, tape, a SAM Splint, pocket mask, gloves, Band-aids, trauma shears, BP cuff and stethoscope. I don't carry oxygen, in over 12 years, I've never had a need and it's not worth the expense.
If you stop and treat an injury when you are off duty, you are covered by good Samaritan laws, since you were not dispatched to the scene and are acting in good faith. (Of course if you are first responding for your service with your own supplies, that is different) On duty, you are held to your state's standard of care for EMS, when off duty, you have no legal duty to act (though this varies from state to state) and are only expected to render aid within the limits of what you have available. Rendering first aid is not practicing medicine without a license, otherwise nobody would ever do it.
Check with your ambulance service, many will stock a small kit for you.
