trauma kits Help with building/getting a trauma kit.?
I'm going to be starting a Emt-B class and I'd like a trauma kit for the course. Do any paramedic's/Emt's/Combat medic's out there know a good set of guidelines for making a kit or where to get a good pre-made kit. I just want a simple but good kit that can handle most situations and I know this is a bit limiting but I'd like to keep it around 80 dollars (poor college student..). I know that's low but I'd be alright with just getting a good starter kit with room to grow with my skills.
And please, can I not get a lazy google search/ebay search..... something a little more in-depth would be excellent. Thanks.
Don't buy a prestocked kit, most of what they put in it is useless junk.
Here's what's in mine:
A few 2X2, 4X4 gauze pads, 1", and 4" rolled bandage, 5"X9" trauma dressing, a box of band aids (You'll use these more than anything else) Tape
SAM splint, a few tongue depressors for finger splints, 2 triangle bandages, cold pack, hot pack,
Pocket mask, gloves, tweezers, trauma shears, I also have a stethoscope and BP cuff in mine, but you don't need them.
You don't need a fancy bag to hold everything. If you have a surplus store near you, get a cheap strong bag that will hold what you need, put the gauze and bandages in ziplocks to organize them and keep them clean.

Slightly off topic but related… Stockton FD (about 45 miles South of Sacramento, CA) stopped ALL EMS activity this morning, as a result of a labor dispute with county ambulance services. ALL meds, oxygen, trauma kits, etc. were ordered off the fire rigs entirely. Stockton FD (a Class 1 fire dept.) will render no medical aid to anyone until the dispute is over. This was at the insistence of the County.
